This Week in Brazil's History - September

 

Tarsila do Amaral was born on September 1st, 1886, and was one of Brazilís most important artists. The modernist painter was one of the founders of the Anthropophagic Movement in the early 20s and helped create an artistic aesthetic that was truly Brazilian.

Brazil claimed its independence from Portugal on September 7th, 1822. The symbol of this event is Peter I's cry of "Independence or Death" at the edge of the Ipiranga river.

Brazil was the fourth country in the world to be introduced to television when TV Tupi, the first Brazilian TV channel, startedbroadcasting on September 18th, 1950.

A Brazilian equivalent to Halloween may be September 27th,when Brazilians celebrate Saint Cosme and Saint Damian bygiving out candy to children.
