Ayrton Senna da Silva is one the great sports heroes of Brazil. He was three times world champion of Formula One racing, and was on the way to his fourth title when he died during a race in Italy on May 1st, 1994

On May 13th, 1888, Princess Isabel signed a law abolishing slavery in Brazil, freeing close to four million African slaves.

Jorge Amado’s novel Gabriela, Cravo e Canela is published on May 22nd, 1958. Te book was a huge best-seller and marks the beginning of a new phase in the author’s work, less political and more sensual.
