This Week in Brazil's History - July

Cazuza was one of Brazil's first rock idols. His songs ranged from poetic romanticism to sharp social commentary. AIDS led him to an early death on July 7th, 1990.

Poet and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes was one of the original bossa nova composers and wrote dozens of songs which have since become MPB standards. He was Tom Jobim's songwriting partner for many years. Vinicius died on July 9th, 1980.

On July 16th, the final match of the 1950 World Cup was played in Rio de Janeiro’s brand new Maracanã Stadium, in front of a crowd of 199,850 people (a record that still stands today). The Brazilian team, however, lost the game to Uruguay (2x1) and the crowd left the stadium in silence.

Santos Dumont built and flew some of the first airplanes in the world between 1906 and 1910. To this day, Brazilians still consider him the inventor of the airplane. He was born in Brazil on July 20th, 1883.

The bandit Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, known as Lampiao, was shot dead by the police on July 29th, 1938. He was the most famous of all cangaceiros and was a character in a large number of cordel romances, poems, and novels.
