This Week in Brazil's History - August

 

Singer, songwriter, and musician Caetano Veloso was born in the state of Bahia on August 7th, 1942. He was one of the musical pioneers who created the Tropicalia style in the late 60's, combining traditional Brazillian rhythms with contemporary popular songwriting. He is still a major figure in Brazilian popular music and received a Grammy for his album 'Livro' in 2000.

Jorge Amado, author of some of the most famous Brazilian literary works, such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, Tieta, and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, was born on a cacao farm on August 10th, 1912. He is possibly the most popular Brazilian author of the 20th century, and his work has been extensively published abroad, translated into many languages.

Carlos Drummond de Andrade died in Rio de Janeiro on August 17th, 1987. He was one of the greatest poets of the Portuguese language, and is particularly famous through his romantic poetry.

Author of the worldwide best-sellers Diary of a Magician and The Alchemist, writer Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro on August 24th, 1947.
