New Year's Eve at Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

Sergio Porto, better known as Stanislaw Ponte Preta, was born on January 1st, 1923. He created some of the most memorable characters in Brazilian humor and still is one of the countryís most famous humorists.

Elis Regina is considered Brazil's greatest singer of all time. The 'Little Pepper' led a controversial lifestyle for her time but had great success singing all styles of Brazilian music, from samba to bossa nova to jazz. Elis died in S“o Paulo on January 19th, 1982.

The city of S“o Paulo, today the 3rd largest city in the world, was founded on January 25th, 1554
