This Week in Brazil's History - February

Candido Portinari was one of Brazil’s leading Modernist painters and died on February 6th, 1962. The image on the left is from a Brazilian bill issued in 1987.

With lectures, exhibits, concerts and performances,1922’s Week of Modern Art caused the most radical aesthetic rupture in the entire history of Brazilian culture and art.

February 19th, 1972: the first official color TV transmission in Brazil takes place, covering a full day of festivities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It included (of course), a soccer match.

Considered 'the largest party in the planet,' Brazil stops during CARNAVAL: 4 days of nonstop singing, dancing, drinking and general over-the-top fun. The most famous celebrations happen in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Olinda.
