This Week in Brazil's History - March

 

Rio de Janeiro was founded on March 1st, 1565 and today is the second largest city in Brazil.

Villa-Lobos’ musical goals of infusing European classical traditions with the folk music of his native culture Villa-Lobos Live includes a rare 'live' recording of the 5th Piano Concerto conducted by the composer and recorded live in Vienna in 1955. The CD also includes Villa-Lobos' Brasileiras Bachianas No3 for piano and orchestra and 4 restored unaccompanied pieces for piano.

Born on March 14th, 1847, Castro Alves was one of the great names in Brazilian Romanticism. His poems and are read and admired to this day, particularly those in which he denounces the evils of slavery.

Four of the largest Brazilian cities and state capitals celebrate their anniversaries this week. Florianopolis (Santa Catarina) Founded on March 23rd, 1726.
