This Week in Brazil's History - November

Cecília Meirelles was born in Rio de Janeiro on November 7th, 1901. She is one of Brazil's most awarded writers, and her stories and poetry have been published around the world.

Brazil ceased being a monarchy and became a republic on November 15th, 1889. The royal family left the country two days later. As a way of celebrating the transition into a new government, yearly local and national elections are usually held on this day.

October 20th has recently been appointed a holiday in Brazil, celebrating Black Consciousness Day. The date was chosen as a memorial to the death, in 1695, of Zumbi dos Palmares, the leader of a fugitive slave colony that stood for close to a hundred years and at one point protected twenty thousand runaway slaves.

Cartola ('Top Hat') is considered the greatest samba composer of all time. Some of his most famous compositions are 'As Rosas Não Falam' and 'Alvorada' (click here to listen). He also picked the name for one of Rio's most famous samba schools, Mangueira, as well as its colors, green and pink. Cartola died in Rio de Janeiro on November 30th, 1980.
