This Week in Brazil's History - December

 

Dom Pedro II was Brazil's second and last emperor. Born in Rio de Janeiro on December 2nd, 1825, he was baptized as Pedro de Alcantara Joao Carlos Salvador Bebiano Xavier de Paula Leocadio Miguel Gabriel Gonzaga. Although he was considered a liberal, fighting for industrialization and the end of slavery, Pedro II was deposed as emperor in favor of a Republican government in 1889. He died in exile on December 5th, 1891.

Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of the most important figures in the bossa nova movement that made that style of music not only a trademark of Brazilian music but was also very influential in North American jazz. His musical compositions, such as Waters of March (click here to listen) are famous around the world. Tom Jobim passed away on December 8, 1994.

The poet, writer, and journalist Olavo Bilac was born on December 16th, 1865. 
Known as 'the Prince of Brazilian Poetry,' he was best known for his Parnassian 
poetry, a style which he codified in the sonnet 'Profession of Faith'.

àChico Mendes, an environmental activist and union leader in Brazil's 
Amazon rainforest, was murdered on December 22nd, 1988. Mendes drew 
international attention for his attempt to safeguard rain forests and 
prompted the Brazilian government to create a 2.4 million-acre reserve.
