This course introduces students to the work of major modern Brazilian
poets, novelists, essayists, and short-story writers, and play writers,
some ofwhich, like Clarice Lispector, well known in this country.
While focusing primarily on literary texts, the course will draw
attention to the important relationships developed among poetry,
songwriting, filmmaking, and playwriting.

Raquel de Queiroz. O Ouinze
Clarice Lispector, A Hora da Estrela
Plus selected poems, short stories and lyrics of several Brazilian
authors/composers (Carlos D. de Andrade, Vinicius de Moraes, Cecilia
Meireles, Affonso R. de Sant' Anna, Moacyr Scliar, Rubem Fonseca,
etc.)
Grading:
Final grade will based on the following: class participation (10%);
2 short papers (10% the fIrst, 20% the second); and fmal paper (60%).
Classes will be conducted in Portuguese. Papers may be written in
Portuguese or English.
